C. Eugene "Gene" Snider of Cape Coral, Florida, passed away on Monday (Aug. 22, 2016).
He was born Oct. 9, 1927, in Mannington, the eldest son of the Late Gilbert Roy and E. Ruth Ryan Snider of the Dent's Run Community.
Gene is survived by his loving wife, Betty Marlene Swann Snider; his four sons, John R. Snider of Mount Washington, Kentucky, James (Denise) Snider of Highland, Maryland, Richard "Rick" (Coleen) Snider of Accokeek, Maryland, and David Snider of Edgewater, Maryland; his four daughters, Terry (John) Fazio of Clarksburg, Sherry (Dave) Hyrck of Salisbury, Maryland, Karen Price of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and Ruth (Jim) Lowery of Charlotte Hall, Maryland; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Also surviving are three sisters, Catherine Jones of Canton, Ohio, Grace Horner of Glen Burnie, Maryland, and Laura Sypolt of Fairmont; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Gene was also preceded in death by his brothers, Bill Snider, Charles "Sonny" Snider and Gerald "Jerry" Snider; sister, Martha Jane "Janie" Dodd; and two grandchildren.
Gene was a 1947 graduate of Mannington High School, where he was a standout football player.
He belonged to several organizations and lodges over the years, most notably, the Vandalia Masonic Lodge of Dayton, Ohio, and Sons of American Legion of Edgewater, Maryland. Gene worked most of his life in the Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C. area in the elevator industry as owner of the "Quality Elevator Co."
Upon retirement, Gene and Marlene moved to Cape Coral, Florida, and for the last 20 years their driveway became the gathering place for friends, neighbors and family every day from 5-6 p.m. for "Happy Hour." He will be greatly missed.
Following his wishes, Gene was cremated in Florida.

A celebration of Gene's life will be held at 5 p.m. on his birthday, Oct. 9, at Camp Letts, 4003 Camp Letts Road, Edgewater, Maryland.
