Betty Jane Powell, 93, formerly of Fairmont, passed from this life Monday (Oct. 30, 2017) at the Mapleshire Nursing and Rehab Center in Morgantown, after a long illness.
She was born in Fairmont, on April 24, 1924, a daughter of the late Harley and Bertha E. Garrison.
She retired from Westinghouse after 39 years of service. She was a fun-loving person who was willing to try about anything. She and some of her co-workers would sometimes take a train to Washington after work on Friday and party until it was time to go to work Monday. She enjoyed listening to country music, watching television and was an avid West Virginia University football fan. She also enjoyed her flower gardens and watching the birds at her feeders.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews; her daughter-in-law, Billie Jo Gross Powell; and dear friend and helper, Helen Jackson.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George R. "Bob" Powell Sr.; her son, George R. "Bobby" Powell Jr.; and four sisters, Lucille Campbell, Zelma Runion, Dorothy Preston and Barbara Nay. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Also her step-grandson, Ryan Gross.
A big "thank you" to the wonderful staff at Mapleshire for her care over the years.
Friends may call from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. today at the Frey Home For Funerals (Addition Chapel A), 320 Madison St., Fairmont. A graveside committal service will be held at the Rest Haven Memorial Gardens immediately following the visitation.
