Betty's Story

Betty S. Jarrell, formerly of Fairview Avenue in Beckley, passed away on Monday (Aug. 7, 2017) in an assisted living home in Chandler, Arizona.
She had moved to Arizona in 2004 and lived with her son, Charles M. (Chuck) Jarrell, until recently.
She was 92 years old and died of the complications of Alzheimer's disease.
Betty was the daughter and only child of Guy L. and Bertha S. Sanders of Fairmont. She was a graduate of public schools in Fairmont and Fairmont State College (now Fairmont State University). While at Fairmont State, she joined Gamma Chi Chi sorority and participated in sorority events and reunions throughout the years.
Betty married Millard G. Jarrell, who predeceased her in 1991, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont in 1948.
Betty was one of the first teachers in West Virginia certified to teach distributive education/retailing. She taught at Woodrow Wilson High School and the Raleigh County Vocational Technical School in Beckley for more than 30 years. While at WWHS, Betty was an advisor to the DECA club and the National Honor Society. In retirement, she was an active member in the Beckley Women's Club, Habitat for Humanity and the Methodist Temple.
Betty is survived by her son, Charles M. (Chuck) Jarrell of Phoenix; three grandchildren, Melissa L. Jarrell (Josh Ozymy) of Corpus Christi, Texas, Christopher S. Jarrell (Rhaina) of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, and Benjamin A. Jarrell of Vail, Colorado; and four great-grandchildren, Sarah Jarrell, Molly Jarrell, Miles Jarrell and Gus Ozymy.

Celebration of the life of Betty Jarrell will be held on Saturday at Horizon Presbyterian Church in Phoenix. Her remains will be interred with her late husband at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill.
