A. Howard West of Chestertown, Maryland, died on Feb. 3, 2017, at his home. He was 90.
He was born in Fairmont, on May 1, 1926, the son of the late Allison Howard West Sr. and Irene Wagner West.
Howard attended East Fairmont High School, but left prior to graduation to enlist in the U.S. Navy, where he earned his GED. Mr. West served in the Pacific Theatre in World War II. He served on three destroyers and a goodwill tour after the war was over. He was honorably discharged in 1947.
On Feb. 7, 1953, he married Martha Jean Ellis from Fairmont and settled in North West, Washington, D.C. Howard continued his education through correspondence courses and Bell Vocational School in Washington D.C., to become a master diesel mechanic.
In addition to owning his own businesses, he was employed by Greyhound Bus Lines as a diesel mechanic, later UPS, Ryder Truck Rental and finally Giant Foods in the same capacity for 15 years. He retired in 1991. Howard and Martha have made their home in Chestertown since 1989.
In his later years, Howard enjoyed crossword puzzles and spending time with his dog, Sierra. Previously, he enjoyed bowling, fishing and working in their yard. He is associated with Hope Fellowship Church in Chestertown.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years; their children, Sharon (Ernie) Dennison of La Plata, Maryland, Diane Kent of La Plata, Maryland, David West of Chestertown, Maryland; a sister, Margaret (Jimmy) Willis of Fairmont; grandson Ernie Dennison Jr.; granddaughters, Rachel and Rebekah West; and great-grandson, Ernie James Dennison.
Mr. West was preceded in death by his grandson, Robert, and a son and daughter in law, Mark B. and Ruth Couvillon West in 2009.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, Maryland, where relatives and friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday. Interment will be in Crumpton Cemetery.
