Alberta Ruth Fortney

Alberta Ruth (Croft) Fortney, 83, of Fairmont, passed away on Oct. 3 at Fairmont Regional Medical Center. She was born on Nov. 3, 1934 in Fairmont, a daughter of the late John Croft and Cassie Ellen VanGilder Croft.
Alberta graduated East Fairmont High School in 1953; she later worked at Philips Lighting/Westinghouse, and also sold Avon for over 50 years. She was a devout member of Hopewell United Methodist Church, and was active in the church choir.
Alberta is survived by sons, Aaron Fortney and wife Vicki Deaton, of Fairmont, and Donald Fortney and wife Veronica, of Fairmont.
She is also survived by grandchildren: Cassie Rye and husband Lucky, of Idamay; Ella Fortney, of Parkersburg; Miguel Fortney, Payton Fortney, and Brianna Fortney, all of Fairmont; and great-grandchildren, Brayden and Gage, of Idamay.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband Albert Lee Fortney; son, Douglas Michael Fortney; and grandson, Dougie Fortney.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the funeral home to offset funeral expenses.
Family and friends are welcome to call from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant Street, Fairmont, with services taking place at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Saturday. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery.

From Shaw School in first grade, to high school at East Fairmont to visits every two weeks on my Meals on Wheels deliveries to her, Alberta will always be in my memories. I will forever miss this charming lady. Rex

I'll miss my Aunt Birdie. I loved spending time with her and making her laugh. Such a gentle soul. I love u Aunt Birdie 😭
